Tip Shop and Kang Kong

Alice Springs' Tip Shop is a haven for old junk looking for a new home. Trevor and I spend a lot of time there when we are in Alice Springs and usually come home with a much fuller car than we expected.

Old shade cloth in good condition is what we always look for. A piece of shade cloth here and there helps young plants get used to the searing sun. But there are lots of other useful bits and pieces too - old garden tools, plastic trellis, chicken wire.

One of our previous Tip Shop finds has got a new use this weekend. A box that Trevor got to transport the body of our passed away beloved dog Jessie back to Yuendumu, is now a great pond for growing kang kong (Swamp cabbage). We are using the run off from the evaporative air conditioner to keep the water topped up.

A strong circle of steel mesh is needed around it though. The dogs are looking at the water with interest - a nice meal of fresh greens accompanied by a cool place to paddle. Irresistible in the 40 plus heat we are currently experiencing.

Happy recycling
Susan
